Sustainability

Our sustainability philosophy is rooted in progress over perfection. We support brands that prioritize natural and sustainable materials and have a strong commitment to social and environmental responsibility, while also leaving room for them to grow as their knowledge and resources expand. We know that as we grow and learn, we will continue to improve as well—and this is just the beginning of our vision for a more sustainable future.

Materials

Natural First

Materials are the core aspect of sustainability we focus on because they are the basis of every product and have a widespread effect on sustainability. Products on Izela must be made of at least 90% natural & sustainable materials like organic cotton, linen, and hemp unless synthetic materials are necessary for function.

Materials

Synthetic When Necessary

Sometimes there are cases when synthetic materials are necessary for the function of a product. This is open to interpretation, but for us, it includes products like swimsuits, rash guards, and sun shirts that need to be lightweight, durable, and hold their shape when wet. When a product uses synthetic materials for function, we look at other areas of sustainability such as using recycled materials, using materials with reduced waste and pollution, small batch production, participating in recycling programs, etc.

Beyond Materials

Overall Commitment

Beyond materials, we look for brands that show an overall commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. This can be shown in many ways such as:

  • Fair Labor Practices
  • Nontoxic Dyes
  • Sustainable Packaging
  • Reduced Production Waste
  • Inclusivity
  • Support of Social Justice Causes

Our focus is on partnering with brands that have a strong foundation for sustainability, with the shared goal of continually improving in each of these areas.
